「絵解き」とは、宗教的背景を持つ絵画である「絵伝」の内容や思想を僧侶が説き語る、教えと娯楽の芸能です。毎年７月末、城端別院善徳寺「虫干法会」では蓮如上人の絵解きが、井波別院瑞泉寺「太子伝会」では聖徳太子の絵解きが、長らくそれぞれに物語られてきました。
水と匠が企画協力する「南砺絵解きフォーラム2024」では、法会行事の期間中に両別院の絵解きをコラボレーション。大阪・愛知からも僧侶を招いての現代的絵解き公演や、楽土庵の「土」や杜人舎の正面看板の書の作者である民藝協会常任理事・太田浩史大福寺住職による絵解きの伝統的意義を伝える講演が行われます。

Nanto Etoki Forum 2024 | Noto Reconstruction Support Project
Etoki is a traditional performing art where monks explain and narrate the content and philosophy of religious paintings called "eden." Every year at the end of July, Jōhana Betsuin Zuisenji Temple hosts etoki on the life of Rennyo Shonin during the "Mushiboshi Hōe" ceremony, while Inami Betsuin Zuisenji Temple narrates the life of Prince Shotoku during the "Taishiden-e" ceremony.
In the "Nanto Etoki Forum 2024," which Mizu to Takumi is collaborating on, etoki performances will be collaboratively presented at both temples during the ceremonial period. We will also host modern etoki performances with monks invited from Osaka and Aichi. Additionally, there will be a lecture on the traditional significance of etoki by Hiroshi Ota, the resident priest of Daifukuji Temple and a permanent director of the Mingei Association.
In this age of advanced video media and declining print readership, it is refreshing to experience etoki—a media format where our ancestors used images to convey important messages instead of text.
